Import a UDDF dive log file

UDDF is the common language of dive log apps. If yours can export it, Diveology can read it.

What is UDDF?

The Universal Dive Data Format is an open file format for dive logs, written as XML. A UDDF file can hold your dives and their profiles, the gases and tanks you used, your dive sites, your buddies and your kit. MacDive, Subsurface, Diving Log and many other dive log apps export it, usually with a file ending in .uddf.

How to export UDDF

Look in your dive log app's Export or Share menu for UDDF. Select all your dives first if the app asks which to export. There are step-by-step guides for MacDive and Subsurface.

Import it into Diveology

  1. Sign in to Diveology and open Import.
  2. Drop the .uddf file onto the page, or click to choose it.
  3. Check what was found, then choose Import.

What Diveology reads from UDDF

  • Dive number, date and time, greatest depth, duration, average depth, lowest temperature and rating
  • Every waypoint of the profile: depth, temperature, tank pressure, no-deco time, ceiling, ppO2, heart rate and alarms
  • Tanks with their size, pressures and gas mix, and gas switches during the dive
  • Dive sites with GPS, country and region; buddies; the dive base, trip and boat
  • Your kit, with serial numbers and purchase details, and which dives used it

UDDF stores everything in SI units (Kelvin, Pascal, cubic metres). Some apps write Celsius, bar or litres anyway; Diveology recognises either.

What happens when you import

In Diveology, open Import and drop the file in (or choose it). It is read on your device first: you see how many dives, sites and pieces of kit it holds, the date range, which dives are new and which are already in your logbook. Nothing is uploaded until you choose Import. Then the new dives go in, a batch at a time, and your sites are matched by name, country and distance so the same reef is not added twice.

Importing the same file again adds nothing: each dive keeps the reference it had in the file, and a dive downloaded by two apps is recognised by its start time and depth.

Your online logbook and this website come with the app. Until it is in the App Store, by invitation.
